Cwmbach Community Wetlands is situated in the floor of the Cynon Valley, it runs alongside the River Cynon and sits snugly between Aberaman, Cwmbach and Aberdare. We have recently taken on a 25 year lease as guardians of the wetlands and it's our mission to not just look after the existing wildlife and habitats but to manage the site responsibly to create further habitats for wildlife to call home. We have lots of everyday residents such as our mute swans, ducks, greebs, coots, robins and swifts but we also have herons, blue heron sightings, egrets, buzzards, kingfishers and a glossy ibis has been spotted. Due to our proximity to the river we also have successful otter families breeding on our land too.
It took five years to get the land purchased (the land is now owned by Down To Zero who are leasing it to us) and had been a very difficult journey, none of the trustees are experts or have any previous experience but we knew that if something wasn't done to get this land that it was at real risk of being purchased, drained and built on - thankfully now that will not happen.
Going forward we will need a help in a range of areas, we are currently recruiting directors to take on small areas of responsibility such as organising events, updating our social media, fundraising etc but we also need help with litter picking and dealing with invasive species. Future plans also include laying pathways and creating hides / viewing platforms.
Excting times ahead! If you would like to get involed in any way, for an hour a month or a few hours a week let us know - we'd love to see you!
