Aberfan Canoe Club was established in 1974 and affiliated with Canoe Wales.  The Club is family orienatated and offers opportunities for people to take part in all aspects of the recreational sport of canoeing, including placid water touring, white water, sea and open boating. For those who wish the club has a dedicated group who take part in the competitive sport of canoe polo.  There are 80 members who are composed of family membership, junior, unwaged, retired and those who compete. Training takes place from two venues in Merthyr Tydfil, the indoor sessions are in Aberfan Leisure Centre and the outdoor sessions are on the lake at Parc Taf Bargoed.
